Dr. Yang Liu is currently an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CUNY – The City College of New York. He obtained his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Iowa State University (ISU) in 2016 and B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Beihang University (BUAA) in 2011. His current research interests include multiphase flow and heat transfer in additive manufacturing, plasma-droplet interactions, blast/shock-surface interactions, high-speed multiphase interactions driven by blast/shock, aircraft icing physics and anti-/de-icing technologies, and unsteady multiphase flow in energy devices. Dr. Liu has published 1 book, 2 book chapters, ~40 peer-reviewed journal papers, and more than 60 conference papers in the field of thermal fluids. He has received several awards in recent years, including the CET Outstanding Faculty Research Award, The ASME MFTC Best Paper Award, The ASME FMITC Best Presentation Award, and Best CET Research Poster Competition Award.

Postdoc Researchers

Dr. Haipeng Zhang (hzhang4@ccny.cuny.edu)
Dr. Haipeng Zhang is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the City College of New York. He received his Ph.D. degree and M.S. degree in Mechanical & Materials Engineering from the University of Nebraska‐Lincoln in 2022 and in 2018, respectively, and his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Kitami Institute of Technology, Japan in 2007. He also worked for the pump department at the Beijing Office (China) of the KUBOTA Corporation between 2009 to 2015.

Dr. Jorge Ahumada Lazo (jahumadalazo@ccny.cuny.edu)
Dr. Jorge Ahumada Lazo is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the City College of New York. He obtained his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2024. Prior to that, he earned a M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from New Mexico State University in 2018 and 2015, respectively. His past research includes the characterization of supersonic swirling jets using PIV, and the study of evaporation behavior of sub-millimeter droplets of pure and nanofluids.

Xiaoxiao (Eva) is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The City College of New York. Her research is focused on the dynamic and thermal behaviors of colloidal droplet in freezing-based inkjet 3D printing processes.

Sohaib is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The City College of New York. His research is focused on the multi-state inter-phase transport processes and thermal energy transfer during interactions between plasma discharge and supercooled droplets.

Sandeep is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The City College of New York. His research is focused on the plasma-assisted hydrogen production. Outside of the lab, he enjoys music and games.

Jooi is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The City College of New York. She is working on the flow-structure interactions of aerodynamically coupled oscillators and offshore wind farm aerodynamics.

Jacob Goldsmith is a senior Mechanical Engineering student at the Grove School of Engineering, CUNY. He has experience in manufacturing engineering and CAD modeling, and will be contributing to the design and development of a thermal chamber as part of the lab’s research on freezing-based 3D printing techniques.
